[UPDATE] VIZIO Framework and Container update 5.4.8

We have made a few improvements to the Yahoo! Connected TV platform on VIZIO VIA TVs and wanted to share with you, our developers, what’s new. VIZIO is in the process of pushing out a firmware update to ALL VIZIO VIA TVs in the field. This update started rolling out in October and should be complete in the next couple of weeks. The most important aspect to you, the developers, is that this update comes with a newer version of the Yahoo! Connected TV Framework and Container.  Check out the details…

Improvements include:

  • General stability improvements
  • Dock scrolling is now smoother and more responsive
  • Video streaming buffering will start faster (shorter buffering times)

How to update:

  • This update will only download to TV after it is turned off with the remote control.
  • Keep it off for at least one hour to allow the update to fully download over the Internet
  • The update will install the next time you turn the TV on, and the TV may reboot itself automatically before the new version is running. You may notice the VIZIO logo blinking when you restart.

How to confirm the update:
You may check for the latest Widget Engine version in the Widget Gallery.

  • Select the “Widget Gallery” Snippet
  • Select the green button – on the remote control or at the bottom of the Widget Sidebar
  • Select “TV Widget Software”
  • The “Yahoo! Widget Engine” version should now be “5.4.8″

What do developers need to do?

  • No code changes are expected to your existing widget code.
  • Yahoo! QA has taken the time to retest all existing widgets on the new Yahoo! Connected TV 5.4.8 Engine.
  • However we encourage you to review your widget to make sure it performs the same or better on this new 5.4.8 engine release.
  • [UPDATE] The Vizio Simulator in the WDK has also been updated with the same core widgets (Container 1.4.1 and Framework 1.3.18) as in this 5.4.8 Vizio field update, so that your development environment continues to match what’s on the TVs in the field

This is posted to the Yahoo! Connected TV Forums as well: http://developer.yahoo.net/forum/?showtopic=7568

Yahoo! Connected TV is a open platform for developers and publishers to create and submit widgets. You should contact Netflix and encourage them to create a Yahoo! Connected TV Widget :)
